Frequently asked questions

a) The minimum education requirements for individual licensed insurance intermediaries include one of the following qualifications:

  • Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) - Level 2 or above in 5 subjects, including Chinese / English and Mathematics 
  • Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) - Grade E or above in 5 subjects, including Chinese / English and Mathematics 
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
  • Diploma Yi Jin (with completion of Maths Plus elective course)
  • A diploma granted by a degree-awarding higher education institution established or registered under an Ordinance of Hong Kong considered acceptable by the IA;
  • A diploma registered or exempt under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance (Cap. 493), where the diploma, subject and institution are considered acceptable by the IA;
  • Specified insurance qualifications published on the IA's website
In general, the IA also accepts the following qualifications that are equivalent to or higher than the above-mentioned qualifications.

b) Applicants must pass the relevant examination papers of the Insurance Intermediaries Qualifying Examination (unless exempted).

The Vocational Training Council has been appointed as the organization for holding the insurance in intermediary qualification examination.

Conditions of Stay
Persons admitted under the IANG are free to take up and change employment during their permitted stay with limitation on time of stay only without other conditions or restriction.

Extension of Stay
Persons admitted under the IANG will normally be granted an initial stay of 12 months on time limitation only without other conditions of stay upon entry. They may apply for extension of stay in the HKSAR within four weeks before their limit of stay expires. Upon applying for extension, non-local graduates are required to have secured an offer of employment which is at a level commonly taken up by degree holders and the remuneration package is at market level.

Right of Abode
Persons admitted under the IANG who have ordinarily resided in the HKSAR for a continuous period of not less than 7 years may apply for the right of abode in the HKSAR in accordance with the law.
