Are you currently using your phone? With the widespread use of smartphones, many people are addicted to their phones, using them while waiting for the bus, in the bathroom, on public transport, or before sleep, often scrolling through Instagram or binge-watch to feel at ease. However, did you know that using your phone before bed not only affects the quality of your sleep but can also have negative impacts on your brain and overall health? Let's take a look at the 5 main disadvantages of using your phone before bed.

Stimulating the Brain

Have you ever found yourself feeling more awake the more you play with your phone before bed? Indeed, not only smartphones but also tablets, e-books, and computers emit blue light of varying wavelengths. According to research from National Taiwan University Hospital, blue light with longer wavelengths (470 nm) can activate the sympathetic nervous system. Eight minutes of blue light exposure on the photoreceptor cells in the retina can stimulate the whole body's sympathetic nervous system for 50 minutes to one hour.1,2 This means that if you use your phone for more than eight minutes before bed, the excessive blue light received by your eyes can excite the sympathetic nervous system, triggering the release of adrenaline and dopamine, putting your body and brain in an excited state, making it hard to fall asleep or causing insomnia.

Affecting Sleep Quality

Blue light can also inhibit the secretion of melatonin, impacting the quality of our sleep. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain to control sleep and wake cycles. When it gets dark at night, the pineal gland secretes more melatonin, making you feel drowsy. In contrast, in the morning, the secretion of melatonin decreases as the light becomes brighter, making you feel awake.4 However, using phones, computers, and other electronic devices before bed exposes you to strong light, inhibiting melatonin secretion and resulting in insomnia.3

Affecting Eye Health

Blinking is a way to keep the eyes moist. Each blink secretes oil from the meibomian glands, lubricating the eyes. When focusing on a phone, we tend to blink less frequently. Less blinking can prevent tears from evenly covering the eye surface, causing dry and uncomfortable eyes, leading to dry eye syndrome.5

Also, when lying down, we often hold the phone close to maintain a comfortable posture. The close distance to the screen requires the eyes to continually adjust focus on the screen, increasing the curvature of the lens and causing blurred vision.

Neck Problems

Using your phone in bed, whether sitting up against the headboard with legs stretched out or lying down with your head propped up, forces you to look down. This places the weight of your head on your neck. Normally, the neck sustains about 10 to 12 pounds.6 However, using your phone in bed can cause the cervical spine to lose its natural curve, while the cervical and lumbar discs endure five times the pressure compared to lying flat7. This can lead to shoulder pain, neck spasms, or stiffness, and potentially cause inflammation of the cervical and thoracic joints. Additionally, using your phone in bed increases spinal pressure, leading to lower back pain and other spinal issues.

Carpal Tunnel Issues

Bedtime is meant for muscle relaxation, but using your phone with your head down can cause finger pain and thumb tendonitis. If you frequently hold your phone with your forearm, you might also be at risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.

How to Use Your Phone Correctly

It's unrealistic to ask everyone to avoid using their phones, but you can follow these tips when using your phone:

Use your phone in a well-lit environment

Avoid using your phone in the dark. Don't let the screen brightness contrast too much with the surroundings to reduce eye strain.

Maintain good posture

Keep your phone at eye level, avoiding prolonged head tilting or looking up7. Also, take breaks for your eyes.

Avoid blue light 30 minutes before bed

Blue light affects sleep quality and disrupts your biological clock. Stop using your phone one hour before bed to help you fall asleep quickly and improve your sleep quality2.

By being mindful of phone use before bed, you can reduce its negative impacts and ensure better health and sleep quality.
